Anthology of Gongans
A monk asked Chan Master Zhijian of Binshan, "What is the original body?" The master replied, "Nowhere in the world is there a match for it." --
A monk asked Chan Master Zhijian of Binshan, "What is the original body?" The master replied, "Nowhere in the world is there a match for it." --
A monk asked Chan Master Lingmo of Wuxie, "How does one attain a state of no-mind?" The master said, "Though mountains tilt and seas overturn, I rest calmly in stillness. Though the earth shakes, I sleep in peace — how could I pay it any heed?"
One day, Chan Master Guishan pointed to a field and said to Chan Master Yangshan, "This plot of land: this end is high, that end is low." Yang said, "Actually it's this end that's high, that end that's low." Guishan said, "If you don't believe me, stand in the middle and look at both ends." Yang said, "No need to stand in the middle, nor to abide at either end." Guishan said, "If that's so, pour water on it — water levels all things." Yang said, "Water has no fixed level either. It meets the high as high and the low as low."
At summer's end, Yangshan came to pay his respects to Guishan. Guishan said, "I haven't seen you up here all summer — what have you been doing down below?" Yang said, "Down below I hoed a plot of land and sowed a basket of seed." Guishan said, "You haven't wasted this summer." Yang then asked, "I wonder what you, Master, have been doing all summer." Guishan said, "One meal at midday, one sleep after nightfall." Yang said, "Master, you haven't wasted this summer either."
One day, while Chan Master Huicang of Shigu was working in the kitchen, Great Master Mazu asked him, "What are you doing?" Huicang said, "Herding an ox." Mazu said, "How do you herd it?" Huicang said, "Once it strays into the grass, I suddenly grab its nose and pull it back." Mazu said, "You truly herd the ox."
When the mind corresponds with emptiness, slander and praise bring neither worry nor joy; When the body corresponds with emptiness, the knife and the perfume bring neither pain nor pleasure; When one's circumstances correspond with emptiness, giving and robbery alike bring neither gain nor loss.
When the mind corresponds with emptiness and non-emptiness alike, attachment and views both fall away, and great compassion reaches every being; When the body corresponds with emptiness and non-emptiness alike, within it is as still as a withered tree, without it a figure of dignified composure; When one's circumstances correspond with emptiness and non-emptiness alike, greed is forever extinguished, and resources flow freely to those in need.
When the mind corresponds with emptiness, non-emptiness, and neither emptiness nor non-emptiness, the true reality first shines forth, and the Buddha's wisdom-eye opens; When the body corresponds with emptiness, non-emptiness, and neither emptiness nor non-emptiness, a single mote of dust enters perfect samadhi, and samadhi arises from every mote; When one's circumstances correspond with emptiness, non-emptiness, and neither emptiness nor non-emptiness, fragrant terraces and jeweled pavilions adorn the pure land, and beings come to awakening within it.
Otherwise, there is no true correspondence.
