When You Recite Amitabha Buddha's Name, He Illuminates and Embraces Us With His Light

When we recite the name of Amitabha Buddha, we receive his welcoming guidance at the time of death, which greatly increases our chance of a successful rebirth. Secondly, it brings us peace and joy in this present life. Amitabha Buddha's defining characteristic is that he possesses eighty-four thousand excellent marks, and within these marks are eighty-four thousand subtle and wondrous signs. Moreover, within each sign radiate various kinds of brilliant light that universally illuminate all beings in the Dharma Realm who recite the Buddha's name, embracing them and never abandoning them.

This originates from Amitabha Buddha's thirty-third vow—the Vow of Light's Embrace. Whenever you recite his name, Amitabha Buddha illuminates and embraces you with his light, bringing gentleness to your body and mind while eliminating your karmic obstacles.

Let us share a story about the miraculous responses born of Buddha-name recitation:

During the early years of the Republican era in mainland China, there was a chef in Jiangsu Province. He had previously cooked meat dishes, thereby accumulating a great deal of killing karma, but later he switched to vegetarian cuisine. While working as a vegetarian chef, he would attend any Buddha recitation retreat (known as a "Buddha Seven") held nearby. He would prepare breakfast and lunch, and once his work was done in the evening, he would go to the main shrine to join the recitation for a few incense sticks' worth of time. Wherever a recitation session was held across the mainland, he would participate. After a few years passed, his eldest son fell ill. Before passing away, the son suffered from frequent nightmares; he would flail his arms and kick his legs in his sleep, deeply restless and unsettled.

One day, the eldest son woke up and told his father: "Lately, someone has been disturbing me in my sleep, causing me immense agony. Last night, the entity who disturbs me appeared and told me that because I committed many sins in my past life, I must endure this suffering as my life comes to an end. I asked him, 'What should I do?' He told me, 'Your father possesses a great deal of the meritorious virtue of Amitabha Buddha's light. As long as your father agrees to share a portion of this light with you, you can eradicate those sins.'"

Overjoyed and seeing a glimmer of hope, the son asked his father the next morning: "Father! Could you share a portion of your Amitabha Buddha's radiant merit with me?" The father replied, "I rarely recite the Buddha's name myself, so how could I share any of it with you?" The son insisted, "It doesn't matter, as long as you agree to it." The father then said, "Alright, sure. I will share a portion of Amitabha's light with you." Miraculously, after he said this, the disturbances never occurred again when the son slept.

The author of this story added a commentary, noting: This chef had not truly engaged in Buddha-name recitation; one could even say he lacked deep faith and earnest vows. He merely supported others' Buddha Seven retreats. After finishing his work, finding himself idle in the evenings, he would see others reciting and casually join in to chant a few lines without genuine sincerity. Yet, as you can see, his body and mind had already accumulated a vast amount of the Buddha's radiant merit.

The author further remarked: If he had recited with true sincerity, just imagine how extraordinary the results would be! This is the profound significance behind why so many people praise this Dharma method.

In other words, the holy name of Amitabha Buddha carries the profound empowerment of his fundamental vows:

First is the welcoming guidance at the time of death. When your mind frequently connects with the Buddha's name, you cultivate the karmic force for Amitabha Buddha to appear before you at the end of your life.

Second is the embrace of his radiant light. By keeping company with the Buddha's name every day, although no visible change can be perceived by the naked eye, your physical body is in fact manifesting Amitabha's radiant light. This is truly inconceivable. This light serves as a sign that your karmic obstacles are being eradicated. Therefore, the second extraordinary aspect of Amitabha's holy name is the supreme magnificence of his light, which is accomplished through his thirty-third vow.
