Chestnuts are a favorite food for many people, and there are many traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formulas that use chestnuts as a medicinal ingredient. While chestnuts are most often eaten cooked, eating them raw is also an excellent tonic for tonifying the kidneys. Middle-aged and older adults can effectively tonify kidney function and relieve lower back and leg soreness and pain by eating a few raw chestnuts each morning and evening.

Chestnuts have a sweet, chewy, and refreshing texture and are rich in nutrients, earning them the title "King of a Thousand Nuts". They are also known as "ginseng fruit" in many other countries. In China, there are many folk remedies and practices for nourishing the body and treating ailments with chestnuts, but most people eat them cooked, unaware that eating raw chestnuts is far more effective for tonifying the kidneys. As far back as the Tang Dynasty, the eminent physician Sun Simiao noted that chestnuts are "the fruit of the kidney, and those with kidney deficiencies should eat them". In his work Qianjin Fang · Dietary Therapy, he also wrote: "Eating them raw is extremely effective for treating lower back and leg weakness and restricted mobility", highlighting the benefits of raw chestnut consumption for this condition.

As middle-aged and older adults experience a gradual decline in yang qi, they often suffer not only from sore, weak knees and limb pain, but may also develop loose or even falling teeth. All these are manifestations of kidney qi deficiency, so addressing these issues should start with tonifying the kidneys, and eating raw chestnuts is a viable option. Each morning and evening, hold fresh chestnuts in your mouth and chew them slowly until your mouth is filled with a starchy white liquid, then swallow slowly. This practice brings noticeable nourishing and therapeutic benefits. If middle-aged and older adults make a habit of eating 5 to 10 air-dried raw chestnuts every morning and evening, they can effectively prevent and treat kidney deficiency, as well as sore lower back and leg pain.

It is worth noting that people with weak spleen and stomach should not eat more than 5 raw chestnuts in one sitting. Chestnuts are rich in soft dietary fiber and have a lower glycemic index than rice. As long as no sugar is added during processing and cooking, people with diabetes can also enjoy them in moderation.
