Chan Master Shitou Xiqian asked the lay practitioner Pang Yun, “Since you first came to see this old monk, how have you been tending to your daily practice?”
Chan Master Shitou Xiqian asked the lay practitioner Pang Yun, “Since you first came to see this old monk, how have you been tending to your daily practice?”
Pang Yun replied, “If you ask me about my day-to-day practice, I’ve no words for it.”
Pang Yun was a disciple of Mazu Daoyi. Shitou Xiqian, a second-generation heir of the Sixth Patriarch, was his peer.
The Chan master asked the same question again, in simpler terms: “Since you first met me, how have you been practicing in your ordinary, everyday life?”
Pang Yun answered, “If you ask me how I practice in ordinary life, I’ve no words for it.”
