Since ancient times, Daoist practice has always advocated the dual cultivation of life and nature. There is a Daoist saying: "To cultivate life without cultivating nature is the first illness of practice." So what exactly are nature and life? And why must both be cultivated together?

The Daoist discipline of refining the mind and cultivating nature is the work of transcending the ordinary and entering sagehood — what we can call "nature work." The Confucian path to becoming a sage and the Buddhist path to attaining Buddhahood both come down to cultivating and investigating one's own mind and nature. The Daoist practice of refining essence and qi is the work of longevity, broadly called "life work." The Daoist practice of refining spirit and emptiness is the work of ascending to true immortality, broadly called "spirit work." Only by unifying and integrating all three into a single whole can one reach the most sublime, supreme, and ultimate attainment.

The method of refining essence requires a clear understanding of how to use the crucible and cauldron, the methods of wind and fire, and the many critical stages: producing the medicine, gathering it, sealing and consolidating, bathing, refining, and circulating the celestial circuit. The Southern School uses a cauldron that relies on an external partner, while the Northern School takes one's own dantian as the cauldron. The Southern School holds that the medicine must be gathered from an external partner, whereas the Northern School holds that the medicine already exists within one's own body — when stillness in meditation reaches the point of yang rising, that is the moment the medicine is produced, and it can be gathered and refined. In modern terms, this yang rising is the moment essence is generated. Refining essence at the very moment it arises achieves the effect of refining essence to replenish essence. Then, applying fire and timing to cook and refine it achieves the effect of transforming essence into qi, and replenishing qi through essence. Further, using the celestial circuit to circulate it achieves the effect of returning essence upward to nourish the brain. However, wind and fire have their proper methods, the production of medicine has its proper time, gathering medicine has its proper moment, consolidation requires a furnace, refining has its oral formula, and the celestial circuit has its proper measure. So while this is an extremely simple matter in principle, it is by no means ordinary. One must first open the Conception and Governor Vessels, then the Thoroughfare Vessel, then fully open all eight extraordinary meridians, and eventually every qi channel throughout the entire body — otherwise, success is hopeless.

Daoist texts often speak of lead and mercury as the medicine. In truth, lead is a metaphor for qi, mercury is a metaphor for spirit, and the medicine is a metaphor for the refined essence-spirit. This is exactly what the Mirror of Entering the Medicine means when it says: "The three supreme medicines are spirit, qi, and essence." The life work of the Golden Elixir Great Dao takes these three — essence, qi, and spirit — as its sole and indispensable starting point.

The work of refining essence is primarily concerned with transforming essence into qi. When essence is activated, if left to follow its natural course, it turns into turbid, tangible essence that drains downward. Therefore it must be refined so that it transforms and rises instead, preventing any leakage. Those with an uncorrupted, pure body — children who have not yet reached puberty — have no leakage of essence, so they can skip the small celestial circuit and begin directly with the great celestial circuit. Middle-aged and elderly practitioners whose bodies are already broken, whose essence is depleted and qi weakened, must absolutely start with the small celestial circuit. First they must generate essence to replenish yang, and apply fire to replenish qi. The entry method for this lies in a single formula: "gathering spirit and silent illumination" (note: the entry method for refining essence is also precisely this step). Just this — gathering, stilling, and illuminating — causes true yang to arise on its own, true qi to return on its own, true fire to ignite on its own, and true spirit to reveal itself. This practice is fundamentally about keeping the spirit from scattering, from wandering outward, and enabling it to be guarded within and gathered into unity. Patriarch Chongyang said: "When spirit illuminates the Kun Palace, true fire will come on its own." He also said: "When spirit illuminates the Kun Palace, true qi will return on its own." Imperial Aide Huangfu Lüding said: "Without interruption throughout the twelve hours of the day, true yang will naturally arrive at the right time." Patriarch Ziyang said: "There is a natural true fire inside, glowing bright red in the furnace." Perfected Xu said: "Internally connect true qi and sustain the breath, and natural transformation will restore a youthful face." The Mount Heng Hermit said: "True spirit is first glimpsed from within emptiness; without reaching ultimate emptiness, you cannot see the true." The words may be countless, but the key comes down to a single formula. Thus the recluse Guxu Yin said: "In the past I met a master who transmitted the oral formula — the key lies in gathering spirit and entering the cavity."

As for the way of gathering spirit, one must first calm the mind, settle the breath, and clarify the spirit. Ancestor Qianxu said: "The key to gathering spirit is, above all, clarifying the spirit." The Classic of Clarity and Stillness says: "Dispelled of desires, the mind naturally settles; clarified, the spirit naturally brightens." Next, one must be able to stabilize the true breath. Outside the state of true breath, unification is hard to reach, and great stability is hard to attain. If the breath isn't stable, the mind isn't stable; if the mind isn't stable, the spirit isn't either — so how can there be a true seed? Cao Yiwen's Song of the Cloud Source says: "Concentrate the breath to attain softness, and spirit will linger long; the true breath flows in and out, unhurried and at ease." Concentrating the breath is precisely the way to gather spirit. Zhang Sanfeng said: "Do not forget the qi; regulate the true breath; simply abide in emptiness and circulate the Kan and Li." Being able to rest in emptiness allows one to attain true stillness and stability. Therefore Chen Xubai said: "Cultivate the body as emptiness, and settle the original spirit within; let the breath come and go without interruption, and the sacred fetus forms, merging with the primordial state." Gathering spirit in the cavity of emptiness naturally brings spirit and qi into embrace, and the sacred fetus forms of its own accord.

The work of gathering spirit and entering the qi cavity is the formula Ancestor Xinglin spoke of: "When spirit returns within qi, the Great Dao of the Golden Elixir is naturally accomplished." It has the effect of lowering the heart fire and raising the kidney water, bringing heart and kidneys into communion, achieving the harmony of water and fire. Yu Yuwu said: "The kidneys belong to water, the heart to fire; when fire enters water, water and fire are brought into harmony and naturally unite." The Immortal School says: "Gather spirit and enter the qi cavity, and spirit returns to the body on its own, waiting for the medicine to arise so that you can light the fire and refine it." This is what Yuwu meant when he said: "The way of internal refining is supremely simple and easy — it is nothing more than lowering the heart fire into the dantian." He could not have stated it more plainly. In the cryptic language of old alchemical texts — for example, Ancestor Zhongli's "The Southern Dipper shifts into the Northern Dipper's place, the Golden Bird flies into the Jade Toad's village," Ancestor Jingyang's "When solar essence merges with lunar radiance, true lead will emerge of its own," and his "Let me tell you the secret of our family's way: the great sun moves into the bright moon," as well as Ancestor Daoguang's "To know the formless principle of the Great Dao, the great sun moves into the bright moon" — all of them point to this one clear, simple formula.

Not only must you practice this way before the medicine is produced, but even after gathering the medicine and sealing the furnace, and throughout the work of warming, nurturing, and feeding the sacred fetus, you must keep gathering spirit, illuminating within, and silently guarding in stillness. Use true intention to guide the true breath and unite with spirit throughout all twelve hours of the day. Wait for yang to rise, then light the fire; when the medicine appears, gather it back into the furnace, steam it, cook and refine it... until you finally return to emptiness, and only then cease the fire. Each step has its own distinct work. The ancient immortals said: "Before the mechanism stirs, use spirit to illuminate and guard within, applying gentle fire to steam and warm." The Cantong Qi says: "Cultivate and nurture the foundation; gather spirit to form the body." And the Immortal School's "Fire burns the seabed and reveals heaven's secret; red furnace, white snow fills the sky" — all refer to the practice at this stage.

In the past, Yuan Kunyi gave concise, clear guidance on the method of refining essence, saying: "There is a secret to refining essence, and it all begins with the kidneys. The inner kidney cavity is called the Primal Pass; the outer kidney cavity is called the Yin Gate. When true essence has not yet been lost and the pure body is still intact, yang qi in the outer kidney arrives at the hour of zi (11 PM–1 AM), in alignment with the celestial cycle. The qi of the human body and the qi of heaven and earth resonate with each other. But once essence is lost and the body is broken, the time when yang arises in the body grows progressively later — some find it arising at the hour of chou (1–3 AM), then at yin (3–5 AM), then at mao (5–7 AM), and some never experience it at all. That is when one has fallen out of resonance with the qi of heaven and earth. The way to practice is this: at midnight during the hour of zi, get up, put on some clothes, and sit cross-legged. Rub your palms together until they are very hot, use one hand to cup the outer kidney, the other to cover the navel, and gather your spirit at the inner kidney. Practice this over time, and your essence will grow vigorous." This is a wondrous formula! However, the time when yang arises isn't necessarily fixed at the hour of zi — you can refine it whenever it arises, and even if the timing doesn't align perfectly with the qi of heaven and earth, it remains extremely effective. This is what is meant by the "living zi hour."

Furthermore, when sitting in meditation, upon reaching the state of ultimate emptiness and profound stillness — a state of no-self — yang will arise as a sign. Refining at this moment is especially powerful. Those who are accomplished in their sitting practice will find that yang arises every time they sleep and every time they sit, no matter how old they are. At the true hours of zi (midnight) and wu (noon), yang may arise even without sleeping or sitting. These are the times when the qi of one's body resonates with the qi of heaven and earth. To refine at these moments is to refine essence to replenish essence, refine yang to strengthen the kidneys, refine the tangible to merge with the intangible, and refine the post-natal to align with the pre-natal! The key is to let it arise and replenish itself naturally, halting the onward march of aging and restoring the body to its youthful condition.

Refining essence means refining original essence; ordinary essence cannot serve as the great medicine. Ordinary essence is tangible; original essence is intangible, dwelling within the original spirit. It comes from the moment when primordial chaos was on the verge of differentiating but had not yet done so — once differentiation occurs, what is produced is ordinary essence. Ordinary essence is also called lustful essence. The Immortal School puts it plainly: "The substance of essence is called original essence. When it attaches to intentional action, it becomes lustful essence, functioning through the organ of lust. When still, it is hidden in the cavity; when active, it relies on the root of lust." Therefore, refining essence must never take lustful essence as its object — one must refine its unmoved, original substance. If this original substance is left unnourished, there is nothing left to work with. Tongxuanzi said: "To cultivate the true without recognizing the true primal destiny — picking medicine from the branches, struggling in vain; you see the seedlings flourish but bear no fruit, for original essence left unnourished will never ripen." Ancestor Boyang said: "Original essence is subtle and hard to behold; we can only infer it through corresponding signs." When original essence is activated, if you let it follow its natural course, it takes on tangible form and becomes ordinary, turbid essence; following the downward path of emission, it creates another human being. The immortal method reverses this: refine it so it transforms into something light and buoyant that rises upward, naturally forming a body free from leakage. Li Daochun said: "To refine essence, first use qi to refine the essence; and when refining, you must also wait for the moment when essence arises." The moment essence arises is the moment yang arises. Therefore original essence is also original yang. The Stone Box Record says: "Original yang is original essence, arising from the most obscure and primordial moment." That which moves without desire and arises without thought is original yang — the stirring of the true mechanism, also called the activation of the heavenly mechanism, like the spontaneous yang arousal of an infant. Patriarch Lü said: "Refine a single point of original yang to transform essence into qi, transcending the mortal body to enter the ranks of the sages." Only by drawing from this can true essence serve as medicine. The method of "taking from Kan to fill Li" means extracting the single point of true yang from within Kan and returning it to Li, restoring it to the original state of the pure yang body of Qian. Therefore Patriarch Ziyang said: "Take the treasure from the heart of Kan, and transform the yin in the belly of Li." Patriarch Sanfeng said: "Add to the Li palace, draw from the Kan palace; plant in the Qian through the Dui." The formula of "taking from Kan to fill Li" is the method of moving the furnace and switching the cauldron to gather the great medicine. However, the interpretation, oral formulas, and methods differ between the Northern and Southern Schools, and we won't go into detail here.

The entry method for refining essence focuses on two things: "ultimate emptiness and profound stillness" and "turning the gaze inward to illuminate." When stillness reaches its extreme, a single yang arises. What is born of ultimate stillness is true yang, and its essence is true essence — the true yang within the Kan trigram. Patriarch Ziyang said: "Seek form within the hazy and indistinct; search for true essence in the dark and obscure." How does one reliably reach the state of "ultimate emptiness and profound stillness"? This requires the practice of gathering spirit to "turn the gaze inward and illuminate." Refining essence, refining qi, and refining spirit all require "true intention" and "gathering spirit" to "illuminate within." And if you want to bring about transformation, you must pay close attention to the duration of your silent illumination. Silent illumination is always the primary focus. The Guiding Principles of Life and Nature says: "Constantly illuminate, constantly be still, and do not conceive of stillness and illumination as separate." Tian Xuanzi said: "Stillness never leaves illumination; illumination never leaves stillness. The refining and transformation of essence, qi, and spirit all depend on these two." In stillness, the mind doesn't stir; in illumination, the spirit doesn't stray. Apply these two, and a hundred wondrous effects arise of their own. So the Guiding Principles also say: "Only when the Dipper's handle reverses its course does a sign appear; only when the spirit's light turns back to illuminate can one become an immortal." Terms found throughout alchemical texts — "inner vision," "internal guarding," "inner contemplation," "guarding the one" — all refer to this very practice. And the achievements of "harmonizing the four symbols" and "harmonizing yin and yang" likewise arise from it. Therefore the Yellow Emperor said: "Hold the mind within, and true qi will naturally flow in harmony." Yu Yuwu said: "When the mind is empty, spirit gathers; when spirit gathers, qi concentrates; when qi concentrates, essence is produced." Zhiji Zi said: "Gathering spirit and stabilizing the breath — this is used from beginning to end in the alchemical method." When thoughts don't stir, the mind naturally empties; when the mind doesn't stir, spirit naturally guards its place. This is the very root of life and nature.

Transforming essence into qi is the work of seeking the mystery within the Water Palace — practicing the small celestial circuit. The scriptures say, "When gui arises, gather it without delay" — meaning, gather that single point of primordial, ultimate yang essence from within the Kan trigram. When Qian (pure yang) joins with Kun (pure yin), it forms Kan (water); the single point of original yang within Kan is the metal of Qian, also called "metal within water." Metal is the mother of water, yet it dwells within water — hence "the mother hidden in the child's womb." This is the true lead, the true seed. To produce the great medicine, one must use fire to urge the metal upward and gather it when its time comes. In other words, gather this true lead — the original yang within Kan — to fill the emptiness within one's own Li trigram. Ancestor Xiao Zixu said: "Take the solid treasure from the heart of Kan, transform the yin in the belly of Li, and from then on become the vigorous body of Qian — whether it hides or soars, all is directed by the mind." Patriarch Ziyang once said: "If there is no true seed within the cauldron, it is like boiling an empty pot over water and fire." The moment yang arises here is the "living zi hour." It must arise in a state free of thoughts and imaginings — in ultimate emptiness and profound stillness — to be true essence. This is something anyone can cultivate and attain for themselves. Therefore Perfected Yin said: "A broken house is easy to repair; withered medicine is easy to revive. Just know the method of return and subdual, and true metal will pile up like a mountain." The method of return and subdual is simply the method of directing spirit fire downward. If a single thought or impulse arises — born of lust and leading to a sudden, forceful erection — that is ordinary essence, not true yang or true medicine, and must not be used. Therefore Yunyangzi said: "To find the primordial true seed, you must lay your foundation in primal chaos." Without reaching the state of primal chaos, the true seed will never arise. And when practicing the transformation of essence into qi — gathering the medicine, doing the work, and circulating the celestial circuit — you must never force it with the intellect. Instead: "Unattached to anything outside, untainted by anything within, body like a dead tree, mind like cold ash, all worldly ties suddenly severed, the five aggregates entirely empty." Let it run its natural course — that is the true formula.
