How Can Those Who Descended from Heaven to Undergo Tribulations Release Their Seals?

Long ago, a celestial being in the heavenly court was revered as Heaven’s Chosen One, destined to descend to the mortal world to undergo tribulations as part of their cultivation, and attain the supreme illumination. The ancients had a saying: “When Heaven is about to place a great responsibility on a man, it will first exercise his mind with suffering, and his sinews and bones with toil. It will expose his body to hunger and his skin to cold……” Anyone who achieves great things must endure all manner of hardship, so it’s true that those carrying a heavenly mandate face severe trials. We also refer to these people as mortals sent from heaven to undergo tribulations. Generally, people sent from heaven to undergo tribulations have the following characteristics:

1. Their eyes always hold a bright, spirited light: For those carrying a heavenly mandate, their will is unshakable. No matter what hardships they face, their confidence never breaks. Even if they occasionally doubt themselves, they quickly regain their resolve. Take Confucius touring the various states during the Spring and Autumn period, for example: even after achieving nothing and enduring untold hardships, he never once considered turning back or giving up. That is why these people’s eyes always hold that bright, spirited light — they know exactly where they are headed.
2. They are highly intelligent and emotionally attuned: A person with a heavenly mandate does not only face tribulations — they also possess the ability and confidence to overcome them. For those without such capacity, hardship is nothing more than empty suffering, so building one’s personal abilities is essential.
3. They face countless trials and tribulations: Before becoming successful, a person with a heavenly mandate must go through all kinds of hardships. These tribulations quietly build their abilities and reshape their character, eventually forging them into the successful people they are meant to become. And so on.

Children who reincarnate from the heavenly dao into the mortal world to undergo tribulations usually have deep karmic ties to spiritual cultivation. Most are also found to have a “child destiny” chart pattern in their birth charts. They often turn to Buddhism or Daoism as they grow older, but do not necessarily take monastic vows.

Ancient legends hold that such children are not registered in the underworld’s registry of mortal lives. The gods and Buddhas connected to them will go to the underworld to register them separately. During this process, the children often fall ill easily: this is because the gods and Buddhas connected to them are working to rescue the children while also sending a warning to their living family members.

Many people begin experiencing unexplained physical discomfort, slipping grades, or poor mental health in middle or high school, and start their quest to seek out immortals and inquire about the dao as a result. These may be the so-called “troubled children”: they are grappling with illness, lack of understanding from their families, dropping grades, disdain from their classmates, and sarcasm and ridicule from people around them (who often mistake them for being mentally unwell)!

At this point, these children are battered by double torment, hit with blows to both body and mind. Their once bright, golden years of youth are consumed by daily agony, physical and mental! No one understands them; they’re trapped in a hopeless predicament, lost and confused, convinced they are truly sick, and taking large amounts of medication nonstop. Their once strong bodies grow weaker and weaker under the constant stream of medication. These children often face unhappy marriages and careers in adulthood, all due to their unique circumstances:

Their marriages and careers are usually disrupted by deities (immortal masters), who will do everything they can to temper their mindset and guide them to convert to Buddhism or Daoism. This is because both traditions hold timeless wisdom classics, and are guided by monks and masters (Daoist masters) with boundless compassion and wisdom! By following this path (practicing diligent cultivation, eliminating all unwholesome actions and practicing all good, and cultivating both merit and wisdom), they can greatly boost their life energy, recover their health as quickly as possible, and avoid straying into evil paths or taking wrong turns!

They are called to eliminate all unwholesome actions and practice all good (cut off all harmful deeds! embrace all virtuous acts)! They’re also told that the realm of gods and Buddhas needs them, that the gods and Buddhas have never forgotten them for even a moment, have never left their side, and will continue to walk beside them like a shadow (inseparable from them) always.

Everyone’s specific circumstances are unique, but every opportunity one encounters is earned through their own cultivation. One should nurture a kind, pure heart, keep their desires few, avoid impure, unwholesome actions and thoughts, not crave fame, profit, or material offerings, and not seek merit as an end in itself!

Read more sutras, learn to regulate your own mind and body, live a healthy, happy life, and you will naturally encounter positive karmic affinities. The more virtue you cultivate, the fewer obstacles will appear in your path. Once you attain wisdom, you will naturally unlock the seal (heavenly lock), and the time of unsealing will come sooner. If you practice precepts diligently and cultivate both merit and wisdom, breaking the heavenly lock will be effortless!

So why do people speak of a certain type of person as a mortal sent from heaven to undergo tribulations?

This is because, since ancient times, every era has had such people: those who endure countless hardships and go on to become the most luminous figures in historical records, what the ancients called “people with heavenly mandates”.

More than two thousand years ago, Mencius said, “When Heaven is about to place a great responsibility on a man, it will first exercise his mind with suffering, and his sinews and bones with toil. It will expose his body to hunger and his skin to cold.” This means that a person carrying a heavenly mandate must endure all manner of hardship and trial. The ancients passed this wisdom down through the generations, which is why we have sayings like “After the wind and rain, the rainbow appears; the fragrance of plum blossoms comes from the bitter cold”.

Across thousands of years, our ancestors have confirmed this truth: those with a heavenly mandate must pass through great tribulations. Only after enduring these trials can they undergo full transformation, rise from the ashes like a phoenix, and ultimately become celebrated figures of their era or great people of monumental achievement.
