The Buddha teaches this clearly in the Sutra of the Good Person (Sigalovada Sutta), explaining that spouses should treat each other with the respect due to an honored guest. Husbands are to love and honor their wives, while wives are to respect and heed their husbands; only then can a couple—two distinct people sharing one heart—build a harmonious home where all matters run smoothly.
